Offering an elegant yet earthy and welcoming atmosphere, The Bar Next Door consistently draws the finest known and unknown talent in NYC. The signature group is the trio and according to the booker, Peter, is “the leanest full group in jazz.”
The Bar Next Door is tucked away in the English basement of a charming restored Federal Period townhouse built in 1829 that also houses its parent, the restaurant La Lanterna di Vittorio. The music began in this cozy basement restaurant when Jonathan Kreisberg, Joel Frahm and Peter Mazza took initiative and approached the owner, Vittorio, requesting each their own night to perform live—Joel on Tuesdays, Jonathan on Wednesdays and Peter on Sundays. When the musicians were still sustaining themselves a few years later and attracting crowds and choice reviews, Vittorio became open to filling the remainder of the week with music. Peter began booking jazz groups and musicians and today, ten years later, Jonathan, Joel and Peter continue to play their ongoing respective nights.
