For over 20 years, the Flamingo Cantina has entertained and set the mood for reggae and world music fans in Austin. Owner Angela Tharp likes to say that people come to the Flamingo to hear “good vibes music.” Artists from almost every continent and genre have played the Flamingo, including Grammy award-winning Rastafarian Burning Spear and Afro-Cuban artist Ricardo Lemvo.
The most endearing aspect of Flamingo Cantina is its all-around friendly vibe. Wednesday nights feature a local reggae band with NO COVER! The stage and surrounding area is intimate, but with enough room for a little personal space. Carpeted bleachers line one corner near the bar and there is an open air balcony above the stage for those that want to get out of the serious dance zone.
The bar has a Tiki theme and serves signature cocktails, though most patrons opt for the 24 oz. Red Stripe that is synonymous with the Flamingo Cantina, and Jamaica. If you’re lucky enough to be there on a night with touring artists, you can get some of Winston’s famous jerk chicken. If you’re into reggae, Red Stripe and Jamaican food, then the Flamingo Cantina is for you.
