Since 1992, Flipnotics has been one of the most well-known watering holes south of Town Lake. Situated in the heart of South Austin, overlooking Barton Springs Road, the small space doubles as both a coffee shop and listening room.
Located on the incline of one of the toughest hills to bike in Austin, Flipnotics has some of the best outdoor seating around. Critics at the Austin Chronicle even voted the new decks at Flipnotics, the Best Outdoor Seating, in their 2009 Best of Austin Awards. These triple-decker slabs are perfect on a sunny day with a glass of their famous twenty-four hour cold-brewed toddy.
Flipnotics features live music seven nights a week, with a happy-hour show at six and a headlining show around eight or nine. Monday nights at Flipnotics have become the stuff of legend around town. The Bluegrass Outfit plays impromptu sets and you never know who might show up. Legendary swing musician, Erik Hokkanen, has been playing Flipnotics every Tuesday night since the beginning. Folks arrive early to grab one of the few seats, as it’s usually standing-room-only by the time Erik shows up.
Flipnotics has been through a myriad of owners over the years, but the place has kept the same south Austin vibe. Some people believe Flipnotics itself has a mind and soul of its own. The employees and patrons are just old friends stopping by for a drink and a song.
