When you see a bar called Frontier with a sign in traditional Western lettering, you might assume you’ve stumbled upon a watering hole that is predominately occupied by patrons in cowboy boots and jeans a couple waist sizes too tight—but you’d be wrong.
Frontier Bar is equal parts neighborhood dive bar and live music venue, and has quickly become a local favorite in the music scene. The main stage caters to a fairly large crowd, while the back patio is ideal for smaller shows and breezy evenings.
The owners, Kyle Stinson and Miguel Ramirez, opened the place in July 2011, and booking agent Javier Vega has been scheduling acts since the beginning. Redd Volkaert, Fortunate Youth, and Buddy Lee have all played Frontier Bar. “We’re an up and coming venue. I’ve booked almost every local band in town to play. We’ve gotten one or two national bands each month,” Javier says.
East Austin has seen continuous development over the past few years. New bars and restaurants open every month providing all businesses in the area with greater exposure to new customers. Javier likens East Austin to the area around Petco Park in his hometown of San Diego, California, leading him to observe: “7th Street was a mess when I got here two years ago. You can tell everything is changing, and it’ll be a totally different area in a few years.”
